It Will Still Be Christmas

doug f. Pete and Jof apparently have a real instinct for creating stellar Christmas songs. Their "christmas special" LP is easily one of the best of the genre, while their version of the Mike Batt classic "A Winter's Tale" is simply perfect. This time around, the sweet, wistful "it will still be christmas" hits just the right note for 2020 and will definitely be on my Xmas playlist.

about

Mince Pies and Brandy Butter, Morecambe And Wise, elves and shelves.
Some things were just meant to go together at Christmas. And so it is with The Boy Least Likely To and the holiday song. They go so perfectly together it is as if the Christmas song was a concept thought up especially for them. Songs from their full length album The Boy Least Likely To Christmas Special have become staples of alternative holiday soundtracks and playlists since its release in 2010. Like Christmas itself, the band’s songs are brimming with joy and excitement, at the same time as being undercut with a melancholy and a feeling of sadness, a longing for something absent or seemingly lost.
Particularly after the year we’ve all had.

It Will Still Be Christmas feels like the Christmas song we all need right now. A single glockenspiel and a piano gently chime away before the song swells to an impassioned chorus of choirs and sleigh bells. As we look for reassurance and comfort in this turbulent world there is something incredibly timely about a new Christmas song from The Boy Least Likely To; particularly one written during these strange and worrying tines. After all, no other band manages to sound quite so uplifting and joyous at the same time as giving voice to our everyday fears and anxieties.

All proceeds from sales of the song will be donated to Refuge to help them to continue providing life-saving and life-changing services to women and children escaping domestic abuse and other forms of gender-based violence.

lyrics

it’s getting darker
earlier and earlier now
they’re stringing up lights in the trees all over town
it’s almost starting
to feel like Christmas again
and I think it’s going to be a happy one

and sometimes
our lives
can get turned upside down
but a light still shines inside us all
so just let it shine

let the Christmas bells ring
even if we have to spend it apart
because in the morning
all we have to do is look into our hearts
it’ll still be Christmas
it’ll still be Christmas
it’ll still be Christmas after all

a little tinsel
goes a long way sometimes
I just need something to give me a little hope
and maybe Christmas
won’t be the same this year
but I think it’s going to be a happy one

and I know
this year
has been hard on us all
and our hopes and fears feel heavier
at this time of year

let the Christmas bells ring
even if we have to spend it apart
because in the morning
all we have to do is look into our hearts
it’ll still be Christmas
it’ll still be Christmas
it will still be Christmas after all

it’s almost starting
to feel like Christmas again
